Walk a mile in our shoes

Are you a war veteran?
Are you a survivor of violence or rape or abuse?
Are you a journalist who has chronicled the worst of human behaviour?
Have you witnessed horrible events or survived a disaster?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, chances are we all have one thing in common - PTSD. The greatest challenge for many “experts” is that they don’t know how this feels from the inside - they have not walked a mile in our shoes. They may be able to prescribe a theoretical plan of action, but wouldn't it be great to hear from someone on the inside what has worked for them. My intention for this site is to provide comfort and hope through learning what others in our shoes have found helpful on the journey to coping and healing. There is a way out. I have found strategies that have helped me to heal and I'm sure others have too.

We insiders have probably all battled one or more of these symptoms of PTSD; depression, insomnia, flashbacks, ongoing fear, numbness, irritability, feeling disconnected or detached , headaches, nausea, anxiety, anger, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, guilt, withdrawal, being hyper-alert or overprotective...... Let's help each other by sharing our stories of how we are coping and healing. I believe that if we work together, we can create an invaluable source of information to help those dealing with PTSD. If you send me your stories of coping and healing, and I will commit to developing this resource.

Together, the mile we will walk in each other's shoes will be the on the road to real healing. Email me with your stories about coping with, and healing PTSD.

... sorry for the delay

I apologize for the delay in adding more PTSD healing strategies. I have been knee deep in a rather unexpected household move. Once I get settled in April, I will return to the business of building this site. In the meantime, I am checking the sites' email with great anticipation. Please share your stories about what you have found helpful for coping with, and healing from PTSD so that we can support each other in this journey.

It's not all in your head !

After many unsuccessful years of talk therapy and medications to help deal with PTSD, the most useful thing I have learned is that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not “all in your head”. This discovery began with reading research that suggested the following; the symptoms of PTSD are the outcome of trauma being stored in our body. This made so much sense to me because the symptoms (anxiety/depression etc.) felt so “physical”. When remembering/reliving the traumatic experience, I could smell it, hear it, and feel it – not just “think” about it. Dr. Peter Levine has studied traumatic stress in humans and animals for over thirty years and has developed a deep understanding of surviving trauma and healing from it. This link to chapter one of Levine’s book “Waking the Tiger” is a great introduction to the idea that PTSD is not all in your head. http://www.traumahealing.com/art_Chapter1.html

Realizing that a real way out of PTSD could be through healing its physical effects on the body, led me to a whole new menu of exciting treatment options. I will explore these in future posts, along with your stories and ideas for coping and healing.
